This past Friday night the Falcons were determined to leave Folsom with a huge win and another CAL championship under their belt before they enter the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs. Entering the game with high intensity, our Falcons got the ball first with junior Freddie Fiske ’19 returning the kickoff 58 yards to start the opening drive on the Vista 19 yard line. On fourth down, quarterback Gunnor Faulk ’18 passed a perfect ten yard touchdown to Oregon commit Spencer Webb ’18, putting CB up 6-0. Faulk threw another pass to Spencer Webb. hitting the two point conversion increasing the lead 8-0. Vista quickly tying the game at 8-8. Faulk then found Jack O’Hearn ’18 for a 16 yard pass and a two-point conversion, which put the Falcons up 16-8.
It was a fight in the first six minutes of the second quarter. On fourth down, Vista connected with an 18 yard touchdown, making the score 16-14. Vista tried to connect with a 2 point conversion but failed. As the Falcons received the ball once again, Faulk unfortunately was intercepted. Vista’s quarterback then took it for himself and ran it in for a 36 yard rushing touchdown. Vista rushed in a 2 point conversion to take a 22-16 lead. As CB started the next drive on their own twenty, Faulk threw a long pass to Webb, putting Brothers on the Vista 26. Faulk rushed the ball himself with a 14 yard rushing touchdown, then hit Webb with a 2 point conversion that puts CB back up on top 24-22. As the aggressive Falcon defense held the Eagles once again, Brothers received the ball. Faulk once again threw an 8 yard touchdown pass to Webb, but was unable to get the 2 point conversion, increasing the lead 30-22 to end the first half.
Vista received the ball on the CB 20 to start the second half, and the Eagles responded with a six-yard rushing touchdown, but failed on two-point conversion, making the score 30-28. Faulk then connected with O’Hearn with his second touchdown of the night. Faulk ran in the two-point conversion to make the Brothers lead 38-28. As Vista got in the red zone they failed to score, but put up a field goal to make the score 38-31. As the end of the forth quarter approached and the Eagles on the CB 30, defensive end Connor Laffan ’18 connected with back-to-back sacks, making the Eagles give up the ball on downs. With only two minutes to play Faulk found Webb for a 58 yard pass, putting us in the red zone. Our Falcons ran the clock down and took a knee, leaving Vista del Lago with a huge road win and a second straight CAL championship.
