Christian Brothers High School – Sacramento, Athletics
Highlights for the week of Nov. 3rd – November 9th
Cross Country:
Sixty-five runners entered the Sub-section meet at Frogtown under cloudy skies. With teams or individuals entered in all 7 races, CBXC was poised to have at the very least 42 runners advance to next week’s Section Finals. As the guns fired starting each race, every individual runner rose to occasion thus qualifying all seven teams! Even those not qualifying to move on to next week’s CIF-SJS Section Championships ran their best race of the season ending the season on a high point!
The highest of high points was newcomer Malia Gay, who within the first ½ mile of her race, ran away from the field earning her a sub-section championship. She looks to be the first Section champ since Kelly McEnerney in 2005.
Also, this coming Saturday, the Frosh Boys, Frosh/Soph Girls and Varsity Men’s teams will be vying for Section Championships as well. There are no givens except that these runners have done the necessary work to earn these titles. Please wish them well.
Varsity Football: The varsity football team beat Vista Del Lago 38-31 last Friday night to win the Capital Athletic League title. Leading the way for the offense was the excellent play of senior Spencer Webb who finished the night with 12 catches for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns. Webb also clinched the victory with a reception with a minute left in the 4th quarter. Defensively, Brothers was led by senior Dan Simoes who finished with 12 tackles on the night. The Falcons begin playoffs against Benicia Friday night at Hughes Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.
Women’s Varsity Volleyball: Last night our Women’s Varsity Volleyball team played in the semi- finals of the section playoffs vs. El Dorado. Unfortunately, they ended up losing in 4 and were denied a chance to win a 3rd straight Section Title.
Their season continues as they move on to the State playoffs. Brackets will be released Sunday and their first match will be Wednesday at 7pm.
Congratulations to the following athletes and coach who were honored in their league.
Coach of the Year: James Todd
MVP: Caty Cordano
All League: Maddie Yeager, Aeron Davies, Sophia Overstreet, Mary Kate Monnat
Men’s Varsity Water Polo: Varsity boys’ water polo advanced to their second straight section championship match with a 5-3 victory over Oakdale in Wednesday’s semifinal. Jason Carrey led the team with 3 goals and goalie Luc Verspieren shut down the Oakdale offense.
Please come support the Falcons this Saturday morning in the section title match. The team plays Sonora HS at 9:30am at American River College.
Women’s Water Polo: The CB Varsity Women’s Water Polo finished 2nd overall in league play this year, with a 15-9 record. This is also the fourth consecutive year that the Varsity Women have made it to the semi-finals of CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs. Additionally, for the third year in a row, the Varsity Women have run into an extremely talented Sonora High School team in the semi-final round, that have dashed hopes of making it to a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championship game. The Women worked relentlessly this year, and made huge strides in replacing roles of athletes that have graduated. Maddie Mercer, Olivia Busch and Sierra Martin were all named to CAL All-League team.
