Falcons Fall To Buffaloes To End Season

By Sam Tanberg

It was a sad Friday night for our Christian Brothers community as our Falcon football team lost our third game of the season, knocking CB out of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff bracket and ending our season with a 10 -3 record. Our boys played against the Manteca Buffaloes for the second time of the season, this time with a lot higher stakes.

The last time our boys played the Buffaloes was the first game of the year when the Manteca quarterback led the Buffaloes to a huge comeback in the last three minutes of the game. Going out this time, our boys knew how crucial this game is.

This high scoring game started with Jaiden Green ’18 getting on the board with a 15 yard rushing touchdown. After a 2 point conversion, CB took an early 8-0 lead. Manteca responded quickly with a QB keeper for a 20 yard touchdown and a two-point conversion to make it 8-8. After a quick second drive, Manteca forced an interception early from the Falcon offense. Another QB keeper TD then an extra point successful extended the score to 15-8.

On the first drive of the second quarter, Manteca’s quarterback drove down the field with a huge pass before finding a way into the end zone for a third time with a 20-yard keeper for the score to make it 22-8. But after a big kick return for the captain Daniel Simoes ’18, the offense had perfect field position and QB Gunnor Faulk ’18 was able to find junior receiver Tyler Green ’19 for the Falcon score. With another successful 2 point conversion, the score was 22-16 going into the half.

After another interception for Manteca, they Buffaloes able to score on their second drive of the second half to make the score 29-16. But the Falcons did not fold over and QB Gunnor Faulk immediately hit tight end Spencer Webb ’18 in the end zone for another Falcon score to cut the Buffaloes lead to 29-24. Manteca’s QB was able to capitalize and find the end zone again for another TD rush making the score 36-24 at the end of the third quarter.

After a big interception for cornerback Michael Grandstaff ’18, CB scored with another TD pass to Spencer Webb cut the Manteca lead to 31-36. After another set of touchdowns for both teams the score was 43-38 with CB getting ready to kick off. Manteca was frantic on the field and CB was able to recover the onside kick by Lucca Batturaro ’18. With under a minute left on the clock Gunnor threw up a prayer, but it was quickly intercepted. After that Manteca took a knee to secure the victory.

Despite a disappointing playoff loss that eliminated the Falcons from the section title race, the CB still proved to be one of the most dominating teams in the section. Winning 10 straight games, breaking school records, and becoming league champs for the senior’s 4th time is a phenomenal season and they should keep their head’s up for years to come. Throughout the season we have had the privilege to see an amazing quarterback find multiple play making receivers including a Division I committed tight end. As a school we should be considered lucky.
