Coaches Box for the Week of Nov. 22nd – 30th

Christian Brothers High School – Sacramento, Athletics

Highlights for the week of Nov. 22nd – November 30th

Cross Country:

Last Saturday CBXC ended its season at Woodward Park in Fresno.  As the seventh ranked D4 team in the State, the expectations were extremely high for this young group of men.  But, the heat and a generally ‘off day’ for the team got the best of the Falcons as they ran to a 12th place finish among the 23 teams in the race.  Although disappointed, the guys took a philosophical view of the lessons learned when running at the highest competitive level.  Except for Senior Patrick Wiseman, the team will regroup during the summer to make a run at another league championship, a possible 3rd Section Championship and a position at the podium for next year’s State Finals.  Along with Patrick, Isaiah Jimenez, Nevin Afong, Sam Copley, Enrique Verschoor, Berto Mujica and Nico Sanchez are to be congratulated on an extremely successful season.  We are really proud of these young men and the rest of the CBXC team.  It was a fantastic season overall from top to bottom.

As a footnote, Isaiah heads down to Mt. SAC in Walnut, CA for the Footlocker Regional XC Meet where he will take on other top runners in the Western Region for a place at the National Meet in San Diego.  Best of Luck Isaiah!

Varsity Football: The Varsity Football program concluded their 2017 season and the 100th year of Christian Brothers football with a semi-final 38-43 loss to Manteca High School last Friday night. Brothers was led this season by an excellent class of Seniors who leave a remarkable legacy of hard work, toughness, and brotherhood on our program. We know the lessons learned throughout the course of their football carriers here at Christian Brothers will aid them as they enter adulthood. A special thank you to all of those who have supported our team throughout the season – it does not go unnoticed by our student-athletes.

Varsity Girls Basketball:

The Christian Brothers women’s varsity basketball team opened their season with their foundation game against Oakridge High School. The Falcons shook off their nerves to end the first quarter leading 14-11. The lady Trojans battled to keep it close, but the Falcons maintained their lead and went into halftime with a score of 25-22. Christian Brothers continued to maintain their lead in an exciting 3rd quarter that ended 33-30. However, the Falcons’ presure and focus was too much for the Trojans. The Lady Falcons won with a final score of 52-43. Leading the Falcons was Brianna Juniel with 15 points, followed by Zori miller and Chance Sims with 8 points each. Jaime Sunada and Monet Brown also chipped in 6 points a piece.

Next, the Falcons traveled out to Elk Grove to play in the Bill Cartwright Classic. Their first opponent was hosting team, Elk Grove. Christian Brothers had a slow start in the first quarter and trailed 5-13. True to form, the Falcons fought back to bring the score to 23-27 going into halftime. Christian Brothers came together and outscored the Thundering Herd 20-7 in the 3rdquarter. The score at the end of the 3rd quarter was 43-34. Elk Grove played hard, but the Falcons stayed focused and pulled out a win with a score of 53-49. Brianna Juniel scored an impressive 33 points. Brian Shine followed with 6 points, and Jamie Sunada added 5 points. The Falcons will face Franklin on Friday.

JV Girls Basketball:

The JV Women’s Basketball Team consists of seven players: Sophia Khatirine, Faith Mucheru, Jazelle Sevilla, Emelie Thomas, Riley Vigil, Anna Vishaj and Isa Warford. On Saturday, Nov. 18 the team participated in the Tigers – Wolves Jamboree at Woodcreek High School. The team played scrimmage games against Will C Wood, Woodcreek and Oak Ridge. The players went all out from start to finish and more than held their own in each scrimmage. They are looking forward to a successful season which begins at Edison High School in Stockton this weekend. Go Lady Falcons!

Freshman Girls Basketball:

The freshman girls basketball team took on Kennedy on Thursday and were victorious.

Varsity Boys Basketball:

The varsity boys’ basketball team took on Oak Ridge on Monday for the annual Foundation game raising funds for the Dale Lackey Award.  Unfortunately, the boys had a tough first game, losing to Oak Ridge.

JV Boys Basketball:

The Junior Varsity Falcon’s tipped off the season last night at the annual Jesuit JV Tournament.  The young Falcons came out strong and with total team effort beat a very athletic Fairfield team 67-45.  They are looking for another victory tonight against a physical St. Mary’s team in the second round.

Freshman Boys Basketball:

The CB Freshman Boys started their season with a 46-36 scrimmage win over Liberty Ranch on Nov. 25.  Since then they have struggled to find their true form falling to a talented St. Mary’s team 41-52 on Nov. 28 and then again to Lincoln High School of Stockton 43-56 on Nov. 30.  The team has shared the scoring well with at least eight different scorers in each game this season.  Despite the losses, there are a lot of positives that can be gleaned from their early season games and expect the Freshman Falcons to find their form quickly with three games in the next week.

Varsity Girls Soccer:

On Tuesday The Varsity Lady Falcons traveled to Bella Vista to begin there quest for a section championship. First half found The Lady Falcons down 3 – 1 with a lone goal from Sophia  Mattos. Sophia tested the Bella Vista Goalkeeper from outside the   box, with a shot that sailed over the head of the keeper. Second half CB played much better shutting down the attack and scoring from a cross from Emma Thompson to the feet of Dior Dupavillon. We had our chances in the second half but we couldn’t capitalize. Final 3-2 Bella Vista.

Next up Sierra High School Tournament. Featuring CB v Davis of Modesto and the late match v Central Catholic.

JV Girls Soccer:

On Monday Christian Brothers JV girls’ soccer team came out victorious against Bella Vista High School winning 5-3! A fantastic showing from freshman girls Jordan Pieretti scoring three goals, Lexi Rakela scoring one goal and returning veteran Sara Cruz capitalizing on a penalty kick was more than enough to hold off Bella Vista.”

Varsity Boys Soccer:

On Nov. 30th, 2017 the Christian Brothers men’s varsity soccer team kicked off the preseason at home under the lights of Sac City College, against the Cougars of Del Campo.  The Falcons got off to a great start, scoring first through a nice move that was eventually scrambled across the line by JT Waldon. Alex Silva doubled the lead for the Falcons early in the second half, before Jared Enos effectively put the game out of reach with a third. The Cougars were able to pull one goal back through a penalty kick, but the Falcons responded quickly and restored their three-goal lead. A well timed cross from senior Zach Lau was finished off by Hunter Dierlam to end the nights scoring, securing the Falcons a 4-1 home victory, and a second win in a row.

JV Boys Soccer:

The JV boys soccer team started the season on the right foot with a convincing 2-0 victory over Del Campo HS. The boys control the possession of ball for most of the game, with many shoots on goal. Tyler Valerio open the scoring with a great shot from 25 yards away. Lars Jensen finished the scoring with a PK after being foul inside the penalty area in the 2nd half. The boys continue play this weekend at the Inderkum HS tournament. A great season is expected from this outstanding group of young men.
