Soccer. Football. Fútbol. Footie. The World’s game. No matter the alias it goes by, it is a sport with millions of fans all across the world, passionately dedicated to the nearly symphonic struggle that plays itself out on the pitch. It is a game with a massive culture and following in many different places — and Christian Brothers High School is no exception. Men’s Soccer is held in high regard within the CB community, and the excitement for the 2017-18 Winter season is ramping up.
Following a period of struggle for the program in recent years, the Men’s Varsity Soccer team now looks to take back their reputation and succeed where past years teams could not. The Falcons had a short Division III CIF Sac-Jaoquin Section Playoffs Journey in the 2016-2017 season, losing 3-0 to an aggressive Lincoln in the first round of playoffs. After this difficult loss, the boys of the pitch now look to not only return to the playoff gauntlet and compete, but also hope to challenge both Rio Americano and Vista del Lago for the Capital Athletic League Championship. Last year, the team placed 4th in the CAL standings, with Rio Americano and Vista del Lago taking first place and runner-up, respectively.
The boys clearly have some big expectations for this season, and meeting said expectations will require a great deal of precision and focus from each member of the team. Men’s Varsity head coach Jack Hunley ’96 is planning on leading the team to these victories and pushing each player individually. The team seems more than ready to give their maximum effort to accomplish their lofty goals.
“The skill level of the team has definitely improved over the last two years,” he says. “I think our players are hungry, and they will have to bring their best effort.”
The Varisty Men’s Soccer Team itself has made huge progress in developing itself since their disappointing season last year. A huge key to this improvement lies in the team’s returning players. With a hefty amount of upperclassmen with a great amount of experience, a sense of consistency now permeates the team, a factor that has been sorely missing in recent years. Returning players include Alex Silva ’18 and Zachary Lau ‘18, who will be crippling the opposing defenses at the position of striker. Will Saalsaa ’18 will be bolstering the team’s defense, Jarod Enos ’18 will provide all-around balance to team composition, and Willie Osen ’18, Lucca Batturaro ’18, Jordan Abdel ’18, Bryant Dhaliwal ’18 and Dominic Poletti ’19 who all be providing support on both offense and defense at midfielder.
Our boys first took up arms against Del Campo on Thursday November 30th in the first home match of the season. The team demolished the competition, with a score of 4-1. With their first victory of the season already under their belt, our boys now strive towards the huge goals they have set up for themselves. The boys will be playing the Pleasant Grove men’s team at Cosumnes River College on Tuesday, December 5th. Catch the action all season long on KBFT Sports.
