Lady Falcons Fall Short With Early Exit

By Owen Hunt

Women’s Soccer took on Manteca Tuesday night in their first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Playoffs. As the higher seed, the Falcons hosted the match at Hughes Stadium. The girls came out with an aggressive start looking for an early goal to break away from the Buffaloes. Emma Thompson (‘18) took the ball to the goal with ease to put the Falcons on top 1-0 early in the first half. Put on their heels by the Falcons strong offense, Manteca struggled to gain possession of the ball through the first half. The Falcons dominated the first with strong offense from Annemarie Barbour (‘19) and Thompson getting countless shots in with a few close calls. The game went to half with the Falcons ahead of the Buffaloes 1-0.

The second half started the same way with the Falcons making strong offensive drives, but Manteca came out with a newfound fire. They took possession of the ball and ran it hard towards the Falcons goal but hit our defensive wall of Julia Atlee (‘18), Hailey Green (‘18), Olivia Ledesma (‘18), and Lauren Towne (‘20). The Buffaloes were set back but eventually broke out through our defense, putting shots up against Towne. The Buffaloes were able to put one back and tie up the score. The game turned chaotic with both teams frantic to get ahead of the other offense, showing off some fancy footwork kept but were unable to finish. The Buffaloes experienced the same struggle, as Towne had a stand out performance, holding her ground and stopping every shot that came her way. The game was in the final minutes when the worst thing imaginable could happen: a PK for Manteca. The shot was taken and struck the back of the net, and Manteca went ahead 2-1. The Falcons were in overdrive trying to bring the game back to a tie but were unsuccessful, knocking them out of playoffs. Congratulate our girls for a great season when you see them in the halls.
