Christian Brothers Softball has always been a threat in the Capital Athletic League. Last year they went 6-4 in league, getting third place and securing a spot in the Division III playoff bracket. They won the first round, beating Manteca, but dropped the second game to Benicia. The good news is that only one player graduated, but it just so happened to be their ace, Morgan Price ‘17. As a starter, Price had a great season, winning six of her nine starts. Other star players for the Lady Falcons last year were their starting shortstop Giana Hays ’19, who committed this winter to Sonoma State University, with a .587 batting average and 19 extra base hits. She is the sure to be captain of the Falcons this year and everyone is expecting big things for her.
The big question is if the second starting pitcher from last year, Abby Burkholder ’18, has the ability to step up and take the spot of last year’s ace. Last year Abby had six in 10 starts and finished with an ERA of 2.25. If she pitches like she pitched last year, she should have no problem putting the defense under her wing.
More key players for the Falcon Softball team are the second baseman slugger Amanda Ledesma ’18 who ended the season with a .419 batting average and four home runs. Another senior star is centerfielder/catcher Grace Hartwick ’18, who had a batting average of .410, nine extra base hits, and nine stolen bases. Also, four year varsity starter Macy Mendoza ’18 has been lights out at third base since she was a freshman. Last year she had a fielding percentage of .911 with only four errors out of 45 total chances.
Our girls are ready to play and excited to take over the Sac-Joaquin Section.
