High Standards Await CB’s Top Ranked XC Squad

By Sara Littlejohn

With the cross country season well underway, the six returning varsity men Isaiah Jimenez (‘19), Nevin Afong (‘19), Sam Copley (‘19), Berto Mujica (‘19), Enrique Verschoor (‘19) and Nico Sanchez (‘19) are hungry to avenge their narrow loss to Placer in the Section Finals meet last season. The graduation of Patrick Wiseman ‘18, sends the team looking for a seventh runner and will likely rely on Jimmy White (‘19), Evan Recanzone (‘19), Hunter Rojas (‘20) or Raphael Lobos (‘21) to round out the team. The varsity men’s team is likely to earn the top spot in D-IV for the third time in four years. With this in mind, the boys are training, watching, and planning to be well prepared when they face off later in the season.

The varsity girls have four returners that are sure to make an impact in both league and in the section. Malia Gay (‘21) is the reigning Frosh/Soph section champion and looks to make a real impact for CB XC this year as one of the premier runners in the area. Right along with her will be Aileen Fortin (‘19), Rain Cheng (’21), and Paige Sparks (‘21), who will help form a strong team. The varsity runners were each able to log well over 100 miles this summer and look to set many PRs this season.

Christian Brothers has experienced an excellent recruiting class this year.  For both the men’s and women’s teams, CB should excel and look to win the boy’s section title, while the women look to finish in the top three. Coach Copley and CB in general has done a great job of recruiting and should experience a lot of success in the ninth and tenth grade levels. With all of its new talent, Christian Brothers will continue to be one of the premier XC teams in the State. In regards to league competition, Christian Brothers is in a new league, and as in years past, Vista Del Lago will be the chief competitor for both men and women. If the team can stay healthy, work as a solid unit, and the coaches continue their hard work, this group has the possibility of being the best Cross Country team in CB history.
