The Men’s varsity basketball team starts their 2018-2019 season in two weeks. Their first game, the foundation game, is scheduled for next Monday at 7:30 PM against Del Oro High School at Christian Brothers. Before the season opener, senior captains Brandon Wiggin ‘19 and Anthony Zavala ‘19 gave a preview for how the season will play out. Wiggin expressed his confidence in the young team, revealing that he has “high hopes for the team. [They] may not be the biggest team out there, but [they] are pretty scrappy and pretty fast. Everything will go good if [they] just play the way [they] do.” Zavala, the team’s point guard, added his input as well, saying, “We’re strong. Energy-wise, we’re going to bring it to the court. I can see us being more of a defensive team because we’re not the biggest, but we will fight for it.”
The team had a record of 8-2 in league play last season, and looks to use this positive momentum to improve this year. They are a young team, with the majority of the players coming up from the JV team last year. However, with the JV team setting their own league record of 9-1, the team’s confidence does not stray. Junior Luke Jones ’20 stated, “I think the junior class is strong. Our senior class is strong. So I think overall, both class will make a solid team.”
With schools like Sacramento and Capital Christian High School now in the Capital Athletic League, the Falcons will face a tougher road to the league championship. But as long as the boys play their best, the season should be an entertaining one.
