President Search Update

Dear Families:

In July, I shared with you that CB President Lorcan Barnes plans to depart at the end of the 2019-20 school year. In communicating that message, I indicated that we would keep you apprised of our progress. I’m pleased to share that the CEO/President Search Committee has been formed and tasked with conducting listening sessions with faculty and staff, developing a job posting, and performing preliminary interviews of candidates. We hosted our first listening session on August 19 and wrapped up with the final session on August 27. We will be refining the job description with plans to post in mid-September.

The committee is comprised of members of the Board of Trustees, faculty and other Christian Brothers stakeholders. I am grateful to the following individuals who have agreed to join me in this endeavor: William Nolan ’69, Tom English, Marianne Evashenk, Donald Fitzgerald, Courtney Hendry, David Holquin ’99, Rose Lester and David Walrath.

We are confident that the committee will be able to produce qualified candidates for the position by the end of the calendar year. Thanks to the strong financial health of the school and the dedicated and loyal faculty and staff, we believe this job is one of the premier positions on the West Coast.

Message from CB Board of Trustees Chair

Dear Families:

The Board of Trustees of Christian Brothers High School has been informed by President Lorcan Barnes that the 2019-20 school year will be his final year at CB. The Board is grateful to Lorcan for his outstanding service to the school and we look forward to working with him as we work to select his successor. Since his arrival in 2004, Lorcan’s steadfast dedication has transformed the campus with more than $22 million in additions and improvements. Last month, the school broke ground on an $11.8 million project to construct new athletic fields and track facilities, expand parking and build the endowment.

As a former Board Chair William Nolan ’69 noted, “Lorcan gets it. He knows how to be the President. He faithfully made sure that the faculty and students of Christian Brothers had the resources they needed to thrive spiritually and academically.”

That will not change. The school is in excellent hands and our students and families can expect an outstanding educational experience in a nurturing, faith-filled environment. Thanks to Lorcan’s leadership, the school is in the enviable position of having strong enrollment, outstanding faculty and staff, and a vibrant first-class campus while carrying no long-term debt. I am certain that we will attract highly-qualified candidates and am grateful for Lorcan’s willingness to serve this year as it gives us the time we need to find the ideal person to fill the role.

“Lorcan Barnes has been a dedicated Partner and a blessing to the Christian Brothers High School community these past 15 years,” said Brother Donald Johanson, FSC, Visitor of the District of San Francisco New Orleans. “We are grateful for his willingness to continue in service to the mission over the coming year and confident in the Board of Trustees’ efforts to identify and hire an outstanding leader who will zealously build on CB’s 143-year legacy of Lasallian Catholic education in Sacramento. We look forward to working with them throughout the process and are grateful for the continued partnership of our families as we move through this process.”

The Board of Trustees is assembling a Presidential search committee and expects to name a successor later this fall. We will keep you apprised of our progress in the Falcon Family News.

Sincerely,

Stephen Mahaney ’69
