Celebrate the Season with the CB choirs

If you’ve never heard the Christian Brothers Choirs perform, now is the time to check them out. We are currently preparing for our Christmas season concerts, and the choirs have never sounded better!

Our two formal school performances will take place on Saturday, December 9 in the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center on the CB campus. In addition to a wide variety of music by the CB choirs, we have invited the choir from St. Robert School to join us in performing at our 2:00 pm concert, and the choir from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton to perform at our 7:00 pm performance. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.

We are also preparing for our Christmas performance tour on Tuesday, December 5. For this annual tour, we take our show on the road to visit and perform for three local elementary/middle schools in the diocese. I’m excited to announce that this year’s trip will take us to St. Mary, Sacred Heart, and St. Francis of Assisi schools.

Our music for both sets of performances includes well- and lesser-known Christmas carols, contemporary Christmas songs, a Renaissance motet, vocal jazz, handbells, candy canes, and more. Tickets for the December 9 performances, which are available here on the CB website, make a great Christmas gift!

Join Christian Brothers High School for its spring choral concert, “A Disney Spectacular” Mr. Christian Bohm and our choirs will be busting out all your favorites from family friendly films. There are two concerts on Saturday, April 22: one at 5 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. So, if you want to see “A Whole New World”, live that “Hakuna Matata” life, or just brush up on the “Bear Necessities”, come see the show.

Hollywood Bowl: Our annual tradition of pop music and flashy choreography continues Saturday May 12 @ 6pm on the main lawn.

CB Students Sing Out at Sac State

CB choir students participated in annual men’s and women’s choir festivals at Sac State this fall. The “Real Men Sing” and “Women’s Choir Festival” each bring together over 400 male and female high school singers from dozens of schools throughout the Sacramento region for a rousing morning of camaraderie and vigorous music making. Both festivals are led by renowned choral directors from throughout California who rehearse the entire body of singers in two pre-selected songs which have been rehearsed at the school sites by the schools’ own choir directors. After the rehearsal period has ended, a handful of the schools sing one song that they have prepared on their own, and then the entire massed choir performs the two songs that were rehearsed earlier.

This year’s invited conductors were both from Southern California. Christopher Borges, who teaches at Bakersfield High School, led the men. His award-winning choirs have a long list of accomplishments, and have performed at regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association. The conductor for the women’s festival was Cari Earnhardt who is the Director of Choral Activities at Fresno State. She has led choirs and has made numerous appearances worldwide as a guest conductor.

These festivals are incredibly fun and important for the students’ development as singers and musicians. They have the opportunity to hear other choirs, work with a different director, and perform with what will be for most them the largest choir they have ever been involved with. The sheer volume and combined energy of the massed choirs are awesome, and are an educational experience not to be missed.

The Grad With a Voice of Gold

Tori Davis ’17 is off to the University of Portland this fall for Music and Vocal Studies. After watching her audition video, which was filmed in CB’s George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center, the university offered her its highest music scholarship.

Tori has been active in the arts her entire high school career, taking choir and theatre classes as well as writing and directing her own one act plays in the past two One Act Festivals. She even appeared as Nickie in CB’s most recent production, Sweet Charity. Check out the video below for an interview with Tori, and to hear her opera-trained voice at work.
